Whether you have been in a major accident or even a little fender bender.

WHAT IF

Whether you have been in a major accident or even a little fender bender in Alberta or at any other place, it is important to know what you need to do. Knowing beforehand can make the situation a lot less stressful as well. It could help to even print the seven steps and keep them in the vehicle.
7 Steps to remember when you get in an accident:

Step 1: Stop. Do not leave the scene of an accident. If you are involved in an accident leaving the scene could result in criminal prosecution.

Step 2: Check for injuries. Health and safety are the most important thing to consider. If there is a question call an ambulance.

Step 3: If there are injuries, damage exceeding $1000 or in the case of a criminal offence such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol call 911. If not call the local police for instruction.

Step 4: If possible move vehicles to a safe location off to the side of the road. Use hazard lights and other safety markers such as cones, or warning triangles.

Step 5: Call towing company to move unsafe or undriveable vehicles. Remember that it is your right to choose which towing company to use. If you have AMA coverage, call TNT and AMA will cover the cost of towing.

Step 6: Take notes on the accident, and get the names, addresses, phone numbers, and licence plate numbers of all involved, including witnesses.

Step 7: Notify your insurance company as soon as possible.
